Fresh Figs, Lucy Style

fresh figs

The other day I got the best gift from one of my favorite farmer’s market vendors: a big bag of very ripe, soft fresh figs.  Heaven!  These were so much sweeter than all the more pretty-looking figs I’ve had all summer…and they were perfect for Lucy, as they were already squishy.  I washed and gave her a fresh one (with intact skin) to examine and taste…

She was a big fan. (Obviously. Fresh figs rule).

I loved how she periodically took the fig out of her mouth to poke and prod.  She had fun twirling her finger around in the seeds.

After she was done (and after I inhaled about 15 figs myself), we cooked the rest of the fruit with a little sugar, vanilla, and balsamic vinegar.  Now we have the most delectable sauce for yogurt, ice cream, or just eating by the spoonful.  Next time you’re out to buy fresh figs (next season, I regret to say)…pick the ugly, mushy ones…they’re the best!

I love feeding my baby fruits and vegetables like this to both eat and explore! I started eating an apple on the plane and after I bit off some of the peel, I handed it over to Violet and she was entertained for a long time. Tomatoes and cucumbers work great too because they can chew off the soft stuff.

It’s so fun to watch them examine, poke, and taste different foods! Must be fun to taste things for the first time…I don’t remember 🙂

Would you believe I’ve never had a fresh fig?! If Lucy has tried one, I am way behind!

Side note, I can’t WAIT for my little one to start solids soon! How old is Lucy? She’s a doll baby.

When you try a fresh fig, I think you will be in love! Lucy is 7 months old tomorrow. We started solids at 6 months, but admittedly some days I skip solid feeding because its just so time consuming! She loves all food so far though 🙂
