Pizza Grease: To Blot or Not to Blot?

nutrition facts pizza

Ah, the age-old dilemma of what to do with excess pizza grease.  Some people blot it with a napkin, some people just dig in, and some people squeeze the extra grease from their friends’ slices onto theirs (e.g. Sandy Lyle in the movie Along Came Polly).  So which method is best?

Unless you thoroughly enjoy pizza grease (which, by the way, is melted fat from the cheese that gets released when cheese is heated), I recommend blotting.  For most kinds of pizza, you’ll save an average of about 40 calories and 4 grams of fat.  That may not sound like much, but little changes like this can really add up.  If all you did was cut 40 calories from your daily diet – and literally changed nothing else about your eating or exercise habits – you’d lose 1 lb every 3 months, which would lead to a 4-lb weight loss every year.

Pretty substantial in the bigger picture, especially since all you had to do was dab a little oil off your pizza.
