Two Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat Vegetables

Getting kids to eat their vegetables is an age-old challenge. Even not-so-picky eaters who really like veggies may require a little strategizing to ensure they get enough. (Just like many adults do!)

For me, these have been the two most important factors in getting my kids to eat – and more importantly, to enjoy – vegetables:

  1. Limit snacks. If your child comes to the dinner table hungry, he’s much more likely to eat what you serve. Limit between-meal-munching to one mid-morning snack and one mid-afternoon snack (unless your pediatrician/dietitian recommends otherwise for your child). Regardless of age, vegetables taste better when you’re hungry.
  2. Serve vegetables first. Would you choose broccoli over mac & cheese when faced with both at once? Probably not. Same goes for your child. So serve the vegetable course as an appetizer or starter. Then serve the other stuff.

Of course there are many other ways to encourage healthy eating habits in your kids, but I have personally found these to be key in making veggie-eating at my house more of a pleasure than a chore.

New follower here! I found you through KERF and after looking at your blog I added you to my feedly! Love it so far! So sensible, which is exactly what I need as a parent who wants the best for her kids, but doesn’t want to have to go crazy doing it! I love these 2 simple steps too. My girls are pretty good eaters, but I love the idea of getting the veggies ready for them to eat first, while I get the rest of dinner ready.

Would you mind sharing where you got that placemat?! I need that for my girls! Also, do you just chop up your green salads really well for you daughter? I never thought to do that before.

Welcome, Nicole! Thanks for your kind comments about the blog 🙂 This placemat was a hand-me-down so I’m not sure where it’s from, but the brand is Kiddopotamus. And yes, after tossing our salad with dressing, I just take a little serving out and chop it up really well for my daughter. She can eat it more easily (usually with a spoon) and doesn’t get turned off by big leaves or stems in her mouth. It’s REALLY increased her veggie intake! Shredded salads are great too.
