Letting Baby Explore Food

When all you’ve ever had is milk, any new piece of food is pretty exciting.  I love giving Lucy large pieces of food to “explore” (a.k.a. examine, poke, bang on the counter, try to stuff into her mouth, etc), because it’s fun to see her so interested in something we consider so routine.  It’s also a great way to entertain her while I cook, and I like that she sees food in whole forms before it’s pureed into something unrecognizable.

During the last few weeks, Lucy has developed 5 TEETH! which means she can now bite off pieces of just about anything, so this pastime is on it’s way out (now a choking hazard).  But I will continue to show her the whole forms of what she’s eating, so that she gets familiar with what’s going into her mouth.

Here are her first experiences with an apple wedge and rice cake…

I love how she’s looking at the rice cake in the first picture!

It’s a very investigative look, isn’t it! And p.s. love how I called a rice cake a “whole” food. Haha.
