What Does a Serving of Chips Look Like?

serving of chips

Once in awhile I crave chips. That salty crunch can be so satisfying sometimes!

Sadly, one serving of chips is astoundingly small. Most of us just break out a bag and begin to munch, but if you actually measure out a portion according to the Nutrition Facts Label, you’ll probably be surprised at its size.

The other day I was munching on my favorite TJ’s Corn Dippers. These Fritos-like chips taste great and have simple, familiar ingredients: just corn, oil and salt. Plus they’re organic and thus non-GMO.

But look how small the serving size is:

Just this tiny handful carries quite the load of calories and fat:

For 160 calories, you could have:

  • 6 oz plain nonfat Greek yogurt with 1 cup of strawberry slices
  • Bowl of Cheerios with 1/2 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 large apple with a string cheese
  • Whole wheat English muffin with a pat of butter

And any of the above would be much more satisfying than 10 chips.

So next time you break out a bag of chips, measure out a serving onto a plate and limit yourself to that amount. If you’re still hungry, snack on a fruit or vegetable.

Haha, your post made me laugh, thank you! I agree with you on this one, but it is damn hard to eat only a “palm” of chips, oh yes it is! Cheers!!

I love chips and crackers, I love that salty crunch. But I am trying so hard to be more mindful of my eating. While I know how many cheeze its are in a serving, (27 if you need to know) I never ever ever count out those crackers. But I need to start doing that and start choosing better. Once a week its okay but not several times a week. And really I just need to stop buying them, cause they are not good for my son either. Thanks for the alternative snacks. 160 calories, I could do 1/2 cup of nonfat greek yougurt and a table spoon of mini chocolate chips. Its my favorite snack, healthy protein and a little chocolate. Sometimes some strawberries, delish!
